FanCraze — Set and Team Collections

Welcome back all!

First things first, congrats to the folks at FanCraze for a very smooth launch of their Marketplace. Given some of the issues faced in the first pack drop, this was a key moment and they did not let us down.

The strategy to split the launch of initial listings and purchases on the marketplace was another smooth piece of planning. This helped mitigate significant listing issues that may have impact the supply / demand balance should they have been launched in parallel.

Not only that, some fairly key questions were presented to the community via the FanCraze Discord channel to garner input…and it was genrally taken on board I’m pleased to say. This included input on minimum listing prices for moments, and wait time between users listing their moments on the marketplace and when moments could actually be purchased by other users.

Personally I was please to pick up what I consider to be a few bargains — unfortunately not the $15 USD Michael Clarke bargain I saw referenced in Discord (Now with a min listing at a solid ~$90 USD). In total I picked up 4 new moments, 3 commons and a rare.

My new purchases on the marketplace
  • Eoin Morgan — 2015 CWC — Common /2000.
  • Jos Buttler and Joe Root — 2019 CWC — Common /1750.
  • Michael Clarke — 2015 CWC — Rare / 625

Given the Irish connection with Morgan, I had to pick him up, and the debut moment of the first man to captain England to a World cup isn’t a bad feature either. On the other 3 moments you may notice a theme….they are all moments from players who won the World Cup which the moment is from.

This is part speculation, part love of the moments and the collectible value they have to me.

I’ve mentioned in previous blogs the concept of “Badges”, “Sets” and “Utility” from the sports NFT project that was the true trailblazer — NBA Topshot. In this blog I’m going to be doing some healthy speculation (backed with some evidence in a recent FanCraze blog post) on potential sets of moments and their impact on collections once collected.

As per usual — this is not financial advice — just healthy speculation which I hope you enjoy!

Set and Utility Announcement

Shortly after the launch of the marketplace FanCraze released a blog post entitled “All About Utilities”. For those not familiar with the term / concept within the NFT space, it refers to the additional value of holding a moment, or group of moments, to the holder above and beyond its value in the market.

This is something that has been vital to the success of NBA TopShot. Some of the concepts outlined in the FanCraze blog appear to be very similar to TopShot recognizing this success. Great news for those involved in FanCraze. The detail was as follows:

  1. FanCraze XP: A system designed for special pack drop eligibility requirements. Special pack drops reward committed collectors with exclusive access to great content
  2. Collections: A set is a curated collection of your NFTs. Sets could be built around teams (for e.g., Australian Batters), themes (for e.g., yorkers), and collections (all ICC World Cup winning moments). Users will be incentivized to collect and complete sets as this would unlock free rewards of limited edition and scarce NFTs. Think of potential themes that we may launch as you snag moments on the marketplace today!
  3. Flash Challenges: Watch a game on TV, collect moments of players featured in game before the game ends, make predictions → Earn rewards in the form of limited edition and scarce NFTs. Do snag moments of cricketers who are currently active, these could come in really handy!
  4. P2E Games (like Axie Infinity): Get your squad ready and battle it out with another user in a game where your performance is a function of your skills and the NFT meta-data. NFTs with better meta-data increase your chances of winning. We are building a portfolio of many such games, and we will release them over the course of the year
  5. Digital Land Ownership: All of this will be housed in our metaverse and fans can own a part of it through ownership of digital land NFTs

For now, lets tackle 1 and 2. Item 3 we will save for another day

Point 1 — FanCraze XP — Note: This is Speculation

Its not terribly difficult to compare this back to the NBA TopShot concept of “Collector Score”. I think FanCraze XP will be very, very, similar to this.

XP Comment in FanCraze blog

TopShot have done a great job of keeping their userbase engaged, and incentivizing long term holders of moments. They have broadly done this by:

  • Establishing a collector score (CS) for individual moments — this generally varies based on Rarity of the moment (E.g. 10 for common, 1000 for much rarer “Legendary” moments)
  • Providing bonus CS multipliers based on the completion (and continued holding) of Sets or Teams. As an example, if you hold all of the moments from a “Throwdown / Dunks” set (which is defined by TopShot), the Collector score is doubled for all moments
  • Providing additional Collector Score bonuses for those that purchase on the marketplace, and hold, those moments. This one is most prominently rewarded by considering the net dollars spent on the marketplace by a user (calculating dollars spent minus dollars received via marketplace sales). The theory being that if you build a collection over time you will require multiple marketplace purchases, and if you do not choose to take profit, that you should be rewarded for that.
  • Then allocating rewards / opportunities for rarer moments / real world experiences based on Collector Score or Collections in general. This includes (in the TopShot universe) “gating” access to premium packs based on Collector Score, and giveaways

Here’s a nice example of Team bonus from TopShot

NBA TopShot Team Bonus Overview

Here is my important take on FanCraze XP. I consider anyone involved in FanCraze quite fortunate to be early in the game — we have been handed an opportunity on a plate in some respects. Based on the blog post, and TopShot’s Collector Score success: It is possible that in order to continue to have access to Epic pack drops, and / or more rarer moments and experiences, you will have to illustrate collector based behavior on the FanCraze platform, and minimize profit taking behavior.

Note: The above statement does not seek to discourage profit taking, everyone has their own unique situation, and they should do what is right for them.

Point 2 — Collections- Note, this is speculation

Moving to their note on collections. This piece sticks out for me “ Users will be incentivized to collect and complete sets as this would unlock free rewards of limited edition and scarce NFTs”.

Collections comment from FanCraze blog

I will speculate on two benefits,

  1. Short Term Benefit: As explicitly noted in the update from FanCraze, Completing “sets” and “teams” of moments will come with an immediate benefit in the form of a NFT (perhaps NOT a Cricto). These will be limited in number, based on the number of set completions at a point in time.

E.g. Did you hold every moment from the England 2019 and Australian 2015 World Cup winning teams? Maybe you receive a limited edition Ben Stokes NFT from the 2019 World Cup Finals.

2. Ongoing Benefit: Completing and holding Sets and Teams will result in longer term benefits in the form of increased FanCraze XP, increased access to rare pack drops, “airdropped” packs, and possibly entry into giveaways for VIP experiences.

I’ll do some more specific blogs on the above later.

3 Sets / Teams I Have My Eye On

World Cup Winning Moments Set — 10 Moments

These are moments of players from World Cups that they won. Given there are currently 2 world cups covered in moments, this is England in 2019 and Australia in 2015.

England 2019 — Jofra Archer (Epic), Jonny Bairstow (Rare), Ben Stokes (Rare), Joe Root (Common), Jos Buttler (Common), Moeen Ali (Common)

Australia 2015 — Michael Clarke (Rare), Steve Smith (Rare), Mitchell Johnson (Common), Shane Watson (Common)

Notable Bottlenecks Based On Mint Count: Jofra Archer (250) / Michael Clarke (625) — please note that currently not all moments are in circulation for the 10 moments.

Other comments: FanCraze have confirmed that the 1975 World Cup rights have been acquired (The first World Cup and West Indies were Champions) so a set like this will expand. Additionally they could add additional moments from 2015 / 2019 WCs

SPEARHEAD Moments Set — 13 Moments

I’m looking at NFT Attributes and like the idea of Spearhead moments being the premier bowling moments. I think a set could be established around this, or having moments of these roles for Flash challenges / P2E games will be useful. I’m putting my list on this together , but it includes players like Rabada and Starc.

Bangladesh Team Set — 5 Moments

This is currently the easiest team set to complete, with only commons you can pick it up for 60 odd USD. If there is to be utility for holding entire team sets this will be sought after by those who haven’t pulled the epics / rares of other teams (AB De Villiers as an example for South Africa.

Players (All Common) — Tamim Iqbal, Mustafizur Rahman, Shakib Al Hassan, Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim

What sets or teams are you looking at?

Til next time!
